Sabor a mi (A taste of me) by Eydie Gorme y Los Panchos (Mexico)

Spain, Spanish, Songs, Lyrics translated into English
Sabor a mi (A taste of me) by Eydie Gorme y Los Panchos (Mexico)
Translation: Laura

Tanto tiempo disfrutamos de este amor
For so long we have enjoyed this love
Nuestras almas se acercaron tanto así
our souls got so close
Que yo guardo tu sabor
that I keep your taste (1)
pero tu llevas tambien
but you also carry
sabor a mí
a taste of me

Si negaras mi presencia en tu vivir
If you would deny my presence in your life
bastaría con abrazarte y conversar
it would suffice to embrace you and to talk (2)
Tanta vida yo te di
so much (of my) live I gave to you
que por fuerza tienes ya
that you cannot help but having
sabor a mí
a taste of me

No pretendo ser tu dueño
I am not trying to be your owner
No soy nada, yo no tengo vanidad
I am nothing, I have not vanity
De mi vida, doy lo bueno
Of my life, I give the good (the best)
Soy tan pobre que otra cosa puedo dar?
I am so poor, what else can I give?

Pasarán mas de mil años
A thousand years may pass
muchos más
many more
Yo no se si tenga amor la eternidad
I dont know whether love exist in eternity
Pero alla tal como aquí
But there just as here
en la boca llevaras
in the mouth you will carry
sabor a mí
a taste of me

(1) sabor= taste, flavor. Here it is used in a poetic way, menaing "a trace of you remains within me and you also have taken on a trace of me".
(2) to prove that I am still part of your life.

Hi, I love this song so much, it reminds me when I was a little girl and hearing my parents and aunts playing it over and over again. Now I play it over and over again.

Hi, I love your translation of the song. I just wanted to add, you said the word "taste" wasn't meant literally but in a poetic way. I think that another word would be "essence" because for those that can relate, when you are around someone you love for so long and all the time, even when they are gone, you can still smell them and practically taste them. They stay embedded in your mind, heart and soul. This was my parents wedding song and they were married for forty five years before dad passed, my mom misses him so much she has told us that she can still smell him, she can still feel his presence etc, it is heartbreaking. That song has a special meaning to our family. Thanks for translating, it makes it nice for non-spanish speaking people to appreciate the lyrics. Even though your translation is very accurate, it doesn't do the song justice porque no es igual, tanto que quierran entender, es una cancion que tienta el alma de los enamorados. Gracias y sigue adelante.

Thanks so much for this translation! I've read tons of others that are just wrong, but this was lovely. You were able to turn it into English but still capture the spirit and meaning of the original Spanish. That's actually a lot more complicated than most people think.

Thanks again! :)

I LOVEEE THIS SONG!!! My Grandma used to sing this all the time. She has passed away, but I can still hear her beautiful voice singing it... "Sabor a mí". This song means a lot to my whole family, we miss you na na....

Beautiful translation, thank you! One question: Should not verse two read: "Si negaras . . ." instead of "Sin negaras . . ."? Thanks, again!

Laura said...

Yes, of course is "Si negaras". Sorry Nazir and thank you for the correction.

Thanx:)I'm Portuguese and the languages are similar in some ways. But some of the words would have never clicked in to me if I didn't have the translation.

All the Eydie Gorme/Los Panchos songs are awesome but this has to be my favorite...& I love the other comments about all the beautiful memories this song brings back:)

Like all the others who said this song means alot to their family, it's the same with ours. I will always remember coming home from school and hearing this song playing...life was good...ask for anything!! :-) I can still feel my Mom's presence when I hear this song. I have to agree with everyone that you did an awesome job on the translation. It's too bad that it's so hard to capture the beauty of the Spanish language in translation. It's something everyone should experience!

Hi, I'm looking for the singer of this song by a lady. Does anyone know?

Thank you for this lovely translation. I'm singing this song in a concert in a few weeks, and it helps me understand what I am singing.

Thank yo so much! I've always known that this song was magical. I never knew it translated in my language. I only felt it. On my wedding day, I encountered some mariachis walking the street and requested the song for mi novio. I now understand why they were so enchanted with the choice. My husband and I think that it's the best memory of our wedding day.

Your translation is as beautiful as the song itself. As an English speaker, I agree, the idea of "essence" would convey better the poetry of the song. There's someone in my life who is now long gone, but her spirit, her essence remains forever.

Hi Laura,

Thanks for the translation. Although I have been singing this song for some time, I had no idea what it meant. Thank you for helping me understand what a beautiful song this actually is. Although I don't speak spanish, i just realized spanish rocks!

gracias,

gloria

Thanks for the translation, want to use this for my wedding in 2 weeks, but unfortunately my fiance does not speak spanish so he could not appreciate the beauty and romance of this song. Will be using the Luis Miguel version, can't wait.

El Chicano made a version of this song and its sung by a woman. She has a great voice. This is such a popular song in Mexico, many versions by women singers can also be found. I hope this helps for sung by a lady.
Great translation by the way.

This is one of my favorite songs and today I finally decided to check the translation. Thanks a lot for this site.

Incidentally, Im trying to learn the Spanish language. May I know if double "L" like the one found in the following phrases of the song--

Pero alla tal como aquí
en la boca llevaras

should be pronounced "ala" and "levaras" respectively or "aya" and "yevaras"

Thanks!

This song was recently covered in 2013 on an album from Alejandro Escovedo, one of the most talented musicians in Austin TX and indeed the world! Album name is "Big Station".

These days I am learning spainish as a foriegner. One day I searched some spainish songs. And I was very shocked at this song. When I was young, my mother had taught me this song and other songs. I love this song and the singer's voices. Now I guess I am hearing this song for one hundred times.
